Hey there! I’m Nurse Jenny, and I am so glad you’re here. If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok or Pinterest lately, you’ve probably seen a lot of buzz about GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide. Maybe you’ve wondered if they are the "magic fix" everyone says they are, or perhaps you’re a little nervous about where to even begin.

As a nurse at Caring Hearts Psychiatry Inc., I see women every day who are ready to reclaim their health but feel overwhelmed by the noise. My goal is to make this journey simple, safe, and, most importantly, effective for the long haul. This isn't just about a number on a scale; it’s about Metabolic Psychiatry, addressing how your food, your mood, and your biology all work together.

Welcome to Part 1 of my clinical series! Today, we are breaking down the five essential steps to starting your GLP-1 journey and mastering your health through the ease of telehealth.

The Power of GLP-1 and the Telehealth Revolution

Before we dive into the steps, let’s talk about why GLP-1s are changing the game. These medications mimic a hormone your body naturally produces to regulate blood sugar and appetite. They help quiet the "food noise", that constant internal chatter telling you to snack or eat even when you aren't hungry.

At Caring Hearts Psychiatry Inc., we believe that healthcare should be accessible. You shouldn't have to spend hours in a cold waiting room just to talk about your weight loss goals. Through our telehealth services, we bring expert clinical supervision right to your living room. It’s private, it’s personalized, and it’s evidence-based.

Ready to get started? Let’s walk through the roadmap.

Step 1: Establish Clear, Realistic Goals and a Personalized Plan

You wouldn't head out on a cross-country road trip without a GPS, right? Your health journey is the same. Before the first dose, we need to define what success looks like for you.

"Losing weight" is a great start, but we want to get specific. I encourage my patients to set "process goals." For example:

When you work with us, we don't just hand you a prescription. We look at your medical history and current health status to ensure the plan fits your unique life. We help you integrate wellness coaching and meal planning so that the medication has a solid foundation to work on.

Step 2: Prioritize Adequate Nutrition and Fueling Your Body

One of the biggest mistakes I see is the "starvation trap." Because GLP-1s decrease your appetite, it’s very easy to forget to eat. But here is the clinical truth: if you don’t eat enough, your metabolism will slow down, and you’ll lose muscle instead of fat.

For most women, we aim for a minimum of 1,200 nutrient-dense calories. We focus on:

Step 3: Protect Your Progress with Muscle-Building

Weight loss is great, but fat loss is better. When you lose weight quickly, your body often looks to muscle for energy. We want to stop that in its tracks. Muscle is your metabolic engine, the more you have, the more calories you burn at rest.

I recommend incorporating strength training at least two days a week. You don’t need to become a bodybuilder! Simple bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or light dumbbells are perfect. Even a 10-minute walk after meals can help regulate blood sugar and keep your body moving.

Think of it this way: the GLP-1 is the "safety net," but your habits are the "tightrope." For more on why clinical supervision is vital during this process, read our post on the weight loss safety net.

Step 4: Track Your Data and Monitor Your Biology

In the world of Metabolic Psychiatry, we say "data is queen." To master your health, you need to know what’s happening under the hood. This means two things: tracking your habits and monitoring your labs.

Use a simple app or a paper journal to track your protein and water intake. This helps us identify patterns, like why you might feel extra tired on Tuesdays or why the scale stalled for a week.

We also prioritize regular lab work. We need to check things like your A1C, kidney function, and metabolic markers. This ensures the medication is working safely and effectively for your specific biology. Understanding the brain-body connection is the key to making these changes permanent.

Step 5: Adopt a Personalized Support Strategy

You don't have to do this alone. In fact, you shouldn't. GLP-1s are powerful tools, but they work best when paired with professional support to navigate side effects, emotional eating, and the mental shifts that come with weight loss.

At Caring Hearts Psychiatry Inc., we specialize in the intersection of mental health and metabolic health. We help you understand why we eat emotionally and how to reclaim your relationship with food.

This is why we created the CURVE Collective. It’s more than a weight loss program; it’s a community of women dedicated to becoming the best versions of themselves.
